Today the US Supreme Court has ruled that LGBTQ+ workers cannot be fired for being LGBTQ. The Supreme court says that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for employers to discriminate based of of a person’s sex also includes gender identity and sexual orientation.
For many years folks have been fired and let go for their sexual orientation and gender identities. While some have been subtle others have been bold. While some employers have tried to cloak the dismissals with other things other employers have outright been clear.
Yes many folks live in states were they are seemingly protected by local laws. But we all know even then jobs have found ways to work around them.
It was only necessary but in this time where oppression cannot be tolerated that a federal law was made to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
While this doesn’t excuse or dismiss Trump’s recent attack on trans-women’s rights The Supreme Court has give the country a step in the right direction.
A federal law will hopefully make it far more difficult to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people in the workplace.
